At the start of your adventure, your characters have a few Techs (Skills in the Remaster, Waza in Japanese) to use in battle. But there are in fact nearly 170 Techs in all! The only way to gain more is to fight, and if a few conditions are met and you are lucky, your characters will devise (spark, glimmer) new Techs in the heat of battle, which your other characters will be able to learn in turn and time.

Note: One easy way to use this page is to CTL+F the name of your character, which will tell you which Techs they are able glimmer, then check the Tech Spark Derivations (Lists or Trees) for the Weapon(s) your character is using to see which Tech(s) you can use to glimmer which Tech(s).

TECH SPARK CONDITIONS

Tech sparking occurs in battle (lightbulb!) and depends on 5 variables:
- your characters' Tech Sparking Type: each character belongs to one of 16 Types and each of these Types have a specific set of learnable Techs: your character's Type determines which Techs you can or cannot spark.
- The character must be skilled enough, i.e. they must have a Weapon Proficiency LV high enough to learn the Tech.
- the Attack / Tech used in battle: can it spark another Tech? most Techs can be sparked (derived) from a basic weapon attack but sometimes you must use a specific Tech, or even a specific weapon (built-in Techs).
- the Tech Spark Rank: each Tech is more or less difficult to spark (higher TSR = more difficult).
- the TechLV of the enemy you are fighting: in general strong enemies have a high TechLV and a high TechLV allows you to have a chance to spark Techs with a high TSR (have a look at the Spark Chances Formula to see how it actually works).

In a few and other words, to be able to have a chance to spark a Tech:
1) your character must be able to learn it (adequate Type),
2) and they must be skilled enough (adequate Proficiency Level),
3) the attack you are using must be able to spark it (adequate attack),
4) the enemy's TechLV must ideally be the same as (or higher than) the Spark Rank of the Tech (adequate power ratio).

! Each character can only spark 2 Techs, 2 Evasions and 2 Spells per battle.

Concretely, check the Characters section to see which Type your character is and check the list of the Techs this Type can glimmer, or just CTL+F their name on this page to see their sparkable Tech list, then check
Notes:
- At the beginning of a battle, before a character's turn, the weapon selected by default is the last one used in the previous battle, e.g. if the last weapon used in the previous battle is Martial Arts, the character can spark Counter on the first turn of the next battle, before the character's action selection.
- You can spark counter Techs against a Confused or Charmed ally, but Confused characters cannot spark Techs.
- When a Tech is sparked in battle, no BP is consumed.
- Once a Tech is sparked, it will be 'Mastered', i.e. registered in Avalon Training Hall, after a Time Jump or after defeating a Hero, available for other characters to learn, even if you remove it from the character's Tech Inventory or if the character is LP-killed.
- Until a Tech is registered in the Training Hall, it can be Sealed and re-sparked any number of time. Although random in some respect, this can be used in battle to inflict damage or status ailment at no BP cost.

For Evasion Techs sparking, see the Evasion Techs section.
For Spell Sparking, see the Magic section.

Note: Sealing
At the end of the battle, if your Tech or Spell slots are already full, you must Seal (erase) as many Techs or Spells as you glimmered that do not fit in the Character's Tech & Spell Inventory. You can seal old or new Techs or Spells. It is possible to re-spark Techs or Spells as long as they are not Mastered (yellow ribbon beside their name).

Sealing can be profitably and repeatedly used (spark a Tech in battle then Seal it) to get a high level Tech for free (BP consumption = 0) about once per battle. Evidently, you never know when it is going to happen, haha.

TECH SPARK TYPES

One condition to spark a Tech is that the character is able to spark it.
Characters are Fissiond into 15 Spark Types that have different sets of sparkable Techs.
In the tables below you will find the list of all sparkable Techs, and which Types can or cannot spark them.

All Types except 07 (special type) can spark a good number of Techs across all weapons (4-5 per weapon, built-in Techs excepted).
But quickly said, some Types conveniently focus more on specific weapons:

TECH SPARK DERIVATIONS

All sparkable Techs derive from another Tech.
Which Tech(s) should be used to spark new Techs?

In a nutshell, all Techs can be sparked by using a basic attack, except:

Sword - Cross Cut: use Double Cut or Stun Slash
- Whirlwind: use Stun Slash
- Vacuum Slash: use Whirlwind, Mach Blade or Stun Slash
Greatsword - Dark Blade: use Empty Blade
Axe x [but for Yo-yo: use Throw Axe]
Mace - Grand Slam: use Fissure Strike
- Nutcracker: use Rocksplitter, Twinstrike or Bonecrusher
Spearx
Shortswordx
Bow - *Starlight Arrows [Starlight Bow]: use Rain of Arrows
Martial - Jolt Counter: use Counter
- Sobat: use Kick
- Crescent Kick: use Sobat or Kick
- Quadrastrike: use Sobat
- Berserk: use Way of Focus
- Guanyin: use Dual Gunner

TECH SPARK LISTS

The following lists show the glimmering info present in the general Tech tables in a different fashion.
Here you can check which Tech can spark (generate) which Tech(s). E.g.:

Slice
–> Mince LV8 (12)
–> Mach Blade LV16 (30)

means that if you use Slice, you may be able to spark Mince LV8 (12) or Mach Blade LV16 (30).

where:
LVx is the Weapon Proficiency Level (LV) required for the character to be able to glimmer that Tech, x being the data-mined LV requirement for sparking. Note that this LV requirement is different than the LV requirement for a character to be able to equip that Tech from the Avalon training instructors (it can be equal, lower or higher).
   (n) is the Tech Spark Rank (TSR): the higher the number, the more difficult it is to spark that Tech (data-mining; many were apparently kept as-is from SFC/Re RS2).
   * means that this is the built-in Tech of a specific weapon, which name is noted between [square brackets]. For Weapon-Specific Techs, see also the Items section.

TECH SPARK PROBABILITY

Concretely, supposing that your character is able to learn the Tech (or Spell) and that the attack used in battle can spark the Tech, the probability of sparking a Tech will then be determined by the difference between the enemy group's strongest enemy's TechLV and the Tech Spark Rank, like so:

TechLV - TSRSpark Chance (%)
6+10
59.6
49.2
38.8
28.4
18
020
-16.4
-23.2
-31.6
-40.8
-50.4
-6-0

From which you may infer that while the Spark Chance is good when you fight strong enemies, it is even better to battle monsters that have a TechLV identical to the TSR of the Tech you want to spark (20%).

Note that unlike in the original game, you needn't target the strongest enemy of the group specifically: they only need to be present and alive in the opposing party.

With Mr. S's bonus: Spark Chance x2.

In the Remake, there is a live, visible indicator for some of your actual chances:

IconSpark Chance (%)
10 ∼ 40
1.6 ∼ 9.6
(None)0 ∼ 0.8

Hence, while the presence of a Lightbulb is sure indicator that sparking is possible, no 'Lightbulb' in front of a Tech is not an indicator that sparking is impossible, but that sparking may be impossible absolutely, or impossible with the current enemy, or possible with a low probability: please refer to the Tech Spark Types and Tech Spark Lists to make certain.

Exceptions: [RS2 data: for reference only.]
1) For Berserk, TechLV = the average of your own Skill LVs, i.e. = (SW+AX+SP+BW+MA)/5.
2) When the character is Charmed and attacks one of their own, TechLV = the average of the target's Skill LVs.
3) For 3 Techs, the TechLV is not that of the target or your own, but it follows complex rules. This concerns:
・Rapid Volley --> Rain of Arrows (16) / Barrage Shot (25)
・Rain of Arrows --> *Starlight Arrows (37)
For these 3 cases, the relevant TechLV is:
- that of target of the character playing first this turn if the character trying to spark the Tech plays later,
- or that of the enemy's would-be target if the character trying to spark the Tech plays first this turn, EXCEPT if the enemy uses an imposed Tech (usually at T1) or a Tech (not a spell) that requires no targeting (AoE Techs like Poison Mist, Maelstrom.. or Techs on self like Counter, Berserk..) when the relevant TechLV becomes weird (e.g. = 29 vs. Guardian's T1 Poison Mist).
It can be problematic for *Starlight Arrows even though all characters can spark it, but it can be remedied to by choosing an adequate enemy (among the matching TechLV 37 enemies, Dark Dragon is the most convenient) and by using formations that impose a specific turn order (like Dragon Stance): e.g. put the Starlight Arrows sparker in second position and have a fast Emperor play first and attack the Dark Dragon.
For a solo playthrough, you can spark Rain of Arrows and Barrage Shot more easily vs. the convenient Guardian at T1, but sparking Starlight Arrows is a problem (possibly not worth the hassle) that can only be solved by your MC getting strong enough, or the enemy targeting one of their own (buff/healing or if Confused) who has an adequate TechLV.
Note that another bug occurs during your battle with Kzinssie 1, the relevant TechLV apparently becomes 29 when Kzinssie's prioritarily targets the Emperor with a Sword Tech and the Rapid Volley user plays first, making Rain of Arrows and Barrage Shot much easier to spark. (Possibly the reason these two Techs can be sparked more easily in the Sealed Cave at the very start too.)

Tech Spark Rank & Enemy TechLV: Best Enemy Matches
[RS2 data: for reference only.]

Here are the best (exact whenever possible) matches to spark the most difficult Techs.
I have listed mostly the easier way to spark each Tech, e.g. for Treecleaver, only via Time Lapse (36), not via the basic axe attack (40) which is nevertheless also possible.

Abbreviations:
TSR= Tech Spark Rank, SW = Sword, GS = Greatsword, AX = Axe, CL = Club, SP = Spear, SS = Shortsword, BW = Bow, MA = Martial Arts.

Good Sparking Spots
[RS2 data: for reference only.]

A few fixed enemies can come in handy to spark good Techs early:
- Mimic (TechLV 9, 88 TP) respawn in Kzinssie's Mansion if you save your game, reset & reload (SFC only).
- Deep One (TechLV 19, 406 TP) in the Avalon Sewers does not respawn but you can spark and flee: redo as many times as you want.
- Termite Soldier (TechLV 23, 232 TP): the grey Insects in the Termite Den (Savannah). Appear as long as you do not defeat Queen.
- Sandbiter (TechLV 24, 510 TP), the red Serpent enemies in Melu Desert. Careful, though (HP/2 in the desert).
- Giant (TechLV 25, 3600 TP) in the Gelid Ruins.
- Pyro Hydra (TechLV 31, 1109 TP) respawns in the Savannah if you do not take the Eggshell during the mini-quest for the Mermaid Potion (talk to the Hunter again). The Guardian in Eirunep Shrine is also TechLV 31 (for 2500 TP).
- Dark Dragon (TechLV 35, 7777 TP) in the Firn Ruins (Austeros).
- Albion (TechLV 43, 3949 TP) on Lake Wyringa (Steppe / Melu).
